WHY ARE THE FIRST THOUSAND DAYS OF LIFE SO IMPORTANT?

The first 1000 days of life, from the conception to the age of two years, represent the period of greatest growth and development of the child, but also of greatest vulnerability. It is at this stage that the foundations are laid for building the individual's mental and physical well-being. Current research indicate the crucial importance of nutrition and food during the first thousand days for human health.

WHAT IS THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF THE PROJECT?

To promote together with agencies, institutions and companies an integrated approach to the topic of food and nutrition in the first 1000 days of life. To collaborate, investigate and act together to generate a positive impact on nutrition and food in this period, which is so crucial to human health and the effects of which extend not only during childhood, but throughout life.

WHY IS THIS PROJECT DESIGNED TOGETHER WITH MULTIPLE ACTORS?

We believe it is essential to take a broad look at issues that represent complex social challenges and that need to be addressed in an interdisciplinary and co-participatory manner. The value of this approach lies first and foremost in the exchange of knowledge among the actors of the project: to this end, our partners step in by making their know-how available to the project immediately.

WHAT ARE THE THREE MAIN SPHERES OF ACTION?

Incentivizes, among mothers and children, particularly those in a situation of fragility, the promotion of proper food and nutrition through a pathway of information and education that generates empowerment. Contributes to the widespread accessibility of food products with high nutritional value.

Supports scientific research projects in order to study the influence of nutrition and nutrition on microbiome and epigenetics. Investigates the possible correlation of soil and gut microbiota to assess their increased diversity. Focuses on the topic of food production and distribution, communicating with companies that have a sustainable approach to environmental resources and produce food with high nutritional value.
Facilitates the networking of knowledge to create more awareness for product improvement and its nutritional value. Encourages the sustainability of a product, its seasonality, and its nutritional value, with particular interest in production that also uses innovative sustainable technologies where necessary.

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY VALUE FOOD?

All partners involved in co-designing the project have contributed to draw up eight core values to support a Value Food, particularly related to nutrition and food in the First Thousand Days. These 8 values provide guidance for a common path to promote and develop joint actions.

DOES THE FIRST THOUSAND DAYS PROJECT CONTRIBUTE TO THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS OF THE 2030 AGENDA?

Given the systemic approach of the project, and given the different and multifaceted activities in which ideas and actions are being developed by partners, there are multiple SDGs - Sustainable Development Goals - that we aim to support with our engagement.
